Celia Mae Harvin Dupree, 85, wife of the late Edison Dupree, Sr.,  died Thursday, February 25, 2010 at the Tuomey Healthcare System.  Born in Wedgefield, S.C., she was the oldest daughter of five children born to the late Edward Harvin and Phyllis Harvin.

 

Educated in the public schools  of Sumter County, she attended Morris College. After working in New York, she returned to S.C. where she met the love of her life and they married on June 5, 1949.  She was a faithful member of Union Station AME Church, where she served in many capacities including:  Treasurer of the Missionary Society, Stewardess Board #2 and member of the Sunday School.

 

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one sister, Alice Harvin Bennett and two brothers:  James Harvin and Edward Harvin.

 

Surviving are four daughters:  Teresa James, Deborah Dupree, Janis Whitaker, Sharon (Rev. Charles) Joe all of Sumter; two sons, Edison Dupree, Jr. and Cornel Dupree both of Columbia; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Phyllis Harvin Johnson of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one sister-in-law, Susan Blackwell and one brother-in-law, Porter Gaymon and a host of other relatives.

 

Funeral services will be held 1:00 P.M. Monday, February 29, 2010 at the Union Station AME Church with the pastor, Rev. Friendly J. Gadson, officiating, assisted by:  Rev. John Allen Lewis, Rev. Joshua Dupree and  Elder Willie Dupree. Interment will follow in the Hillside Memorial Park. Mrs. Dupree will be placed in the church at 12:00 noon for public viewing until the hour of service.  The public may also view on Sunday afternoon from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. at the Palmer Memorial Chapel. The family will recieve friends at the residence of 3130 Caitlynn Drive in Sumter.  The funeral procession will depart from that residence at 12:00 noon on Monday.
