Mrs Catherine Davis Baxter

Catherine "Doll" Davis Baxter, wife of the late Deacons Douglas Baxter. She was the youngest of twelve children born to the late Charlie and Georgianna Colclough Davis. Catherine entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, September 28, 2022 at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital in Sumter, SC. Catherine was a life-long member raised in the Ebenezer A.M.E. Church in Mayesville, SC, where she served in many capacities, including; Senior Steward, Gospel Choir Sunday School Teacher and the Culinary Staff. She was a spiritual woman and loved the Lord. She attended Sumter County Public schools and was a graduate from Mayesville Institute. In 1948, Catherine met the love of her life, Douglas Baxter while he was visiting a friend at her parents home. In May of 1953 they were united in marriage and were blessed with five anointed children. Catherine and her husband both held jobs and worked . She also worked as an assistant to the Kindergarten Class and retired as a school bus driver, in 1997. She was a member of the Queen of Lynchburg #247 Order of Eastern Star. She re-called that the difference between how she was raised and how her children were raised, was that they had more freedom. “There were a lot of things that were given to them; that I couldn't get. Back then money was scarce, but children and parents worked together to afford what we needed; we did the best we could. Remember, you work for what you want. My final advice is "believe in yourself, go after what you want and always do your best." In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter Cathy Fran Baxter Dunham, a son, Richard M. Baxter; five brothers and six sisters. Those left to cherish precious memories are two sons, David Lesane, Sumter, SC and Ronnie (Angela) Baxter, Valdosta, GA; four daughters, Daisy Calhoun, Margaret Wilson Wilder, Julia Baxter Carter, and Brenda (Stafphon) Williams all of Sumter, SC; fourteen (14) grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Luetisha Baxter Dickey of Lynchburg, SC and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins; other relatives and friends.
