Alberta Lewis Davis

Alberta L. Davis, age 92, of Sumter, South Carolina departed this life at her daughter and son-in law’s home on August 26, 2018. Born in Dillon County, February 26, 1926 she was a daughter of the late James Moses Lewis and Mary Jane Owens Lewis, and the wife of the late Freddie Lee Davis. She received her early education in the public schools in Dillon and Marion Counties. She graduated from Morris College, Sumter, SC in 1949 and did further studies at South Carolina State University and North Carolina Central in Durham, NC. Mrs. Davis was reared in a Christian home, where she learned the power of prayer at an early age. She was baptized and joined Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, in Fork, South Carolina. After moving to Marion South Carolina, she joined Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church. Mrs. Davis married the late Freddie Lee Davis and to this loving union three children were born. After marriage, she joined Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, where she worked faithfully as long as she was able. She was a faithful member of the Senior Choir, and served as President of the Senior Missionary Ministry for many years. She also served as a Secretary, was an adult Sunday school teacher and a Bible school teacher. She worked wherever she was needed. Mother Davis faithfully cooked and provided services for the sick and anyone who was in need. She enjoyed helping and assisting others and fed anyone who needed a meal. In her spirit of generosity, she enjoyed cooking and sharing with others. Mrs. Davis retired from Darlington County School District #6. She taught in the public schools for 30 years. She was a member of the local State Education Association, the Retired Teachers Association, the United Order of Tent Elizabeth #57, the Morris College Alumni Chapter of Sumter and member of the N.A.A.C.P. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband Freddie Davis, two sons Frederick Rodney Davis, Freddie Alvin Davis, Jr., an adopted daughter-in-law Linda T. Boykin. Her siblings: Frierson Lewis, Mary Ellen Barnette, Hattie Gwaltney, Addie Lewis, Gusella Moody, Frances Fleming, Anna Brown, Margaret Roberson, and Flossie L. Cooley. Those left to cherish precious memories are her daughter, Gloria (Carl) Baker of Sumter, daughter-in-law Geneva Davis, and adopted son-in-law Marvin Boykin; five grandchildren: Melinda (A.J.) Mihlbauer, Carl Baker Jr., Melanie Baker, Sean Baker and Jeremy Davis; four adopted grandchildren: Jeffery Witherspoon, Erik (Tasha) Boykin, Justin (Brittany) Boykin and Gena McGee; seven great-grandchildren Chanelle, Jordyn, Eliana, Addyson, Arik, Jeremy Davis, Jr, and Zamoria Davis; god-daughters: Jean C. Solomon, Mary Lucas, Elizabeth S. Askew, Liz Stanley and Mary Green; adopted sons: Pastor Ricky S. Simmons, Pastor Nate Brock, and Deacon David Weeks. Her special and close friends Susanna Hannibal, Essie Brunson (deceased), Ann Pinckney, Albertha Washington, Ada Ford, Edna Coleman and a host of other relatives and dear friends.
