Mrs. Bonnie Lurke Carty

Bonnie Lurke Carty transitioned on Friday, November 3, 2023 at the Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital in Sumter, South Carolina. Born in Sumter County on April 26, 1946, she was the youngest daughter of four children born to the late Tommie Windle and Thomasina Helton Lurke. Bonnie was a graduate of Lincoln High School in the Class of 1964 and attended South Carolina State College in Orangeburg, SC. She moved to Newark, New Jersey where she was first employed by IBM, as a Technical Assistant. Later, she worked for Continental Airlines, based at the Newark Airport. She retired from both Continental and American Airlines. After her retirement, she relocated to Sumter and affiliated with St. James United Methodist Church, Sumter. She participated in many activities including: Voter Registration Manager, YMCA of Sumter, The Lincoln High School Alumni Association and School District 17 Crossing Guard. In her spare time, she enjoyed spending time with family, friends and classmates. Her favorite pastimes were Broadway Theater, experiencing delicious culinary meals at fine restaurants and traveling. Traveling with her big sister, Janet to various international and domestic locales was especially meaningful to her. Bonnie’s most moving travel experience took place in Ghana, West Africa where they visited the “Point of No Return”. Bonnie knew how to enjoy life. She would fly to New Orleans for one day, to celebrate her birthday! In addition to her parents, Bonnie was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Carty; her sister, Myrtis Rollerson and her brother, Isaac Lurke. She leaves to cherish precious memories her beloved sister, Janet Miles and her husband George, (who was like a brother); nieces: Dr. Tammy Miles-Brown, and Tiffany L. (Michael) Smiley; nephews: Andre L. Rollerson, Windle D. (Daphne G.) Rollerson and Ian (Jamie M.) Lurke; grandnieces: Taylor Janet Brown, Kyra Smiley and Mila Smiley, Iris Lurke and Iliana Lurke; grandnephews: Drake T. Rollerson, Devyn E. Rollerson and Jaden Lurke; a sister-in-law Roslyn, “Roz” Lurke; brother-in-law, Leon Rollerson and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.
