Derrick Finney

A heartfelt scripture that Derrick worked hard to apply in his life says “As far as it depends upon you, be peaceable with all men.” Romans 12:18. Derrick was a loving young man with skin so smooth and clear, and a face so chiseled and perfect. His eye lashes so long, and his eyebrows so shapely. He had the facial structure of a model and the body of an athlete, such a handsome young fellow. He was caring and nurturing. Anything we needed or asked of him he would always make sure he got or tried to do for us. He did so much for everybody, always so busy and so active. He worked hard to provide for himself, his home, his family, and for his girlfriend. He always took care of helping with the repairs at my mothers home, his home. He took care of her yard and half of the neighbors yards as well. Everybody loved Derrick and his pure spirit. He just had a natural charisma and charm about himself, so much personality. Anytime he was around we always knew it would be a good time. He was somebody that the family and friends always wanted to be around and didn’t want to leave. He was a protector. He made it his priority to keep his home and loved ones safe. He was the man of the house, which was a big responsibility especially considering he was the second to the youngest of 8. He enjoyed the company of his family, close friends and girlfriend. A neighbor described him as caring and kind and he always wanted to know if you needed help. He was a friendly young man. If he saw you out and knew you, he would always make it a point to stop and speak, and make sure to get your attention to say hello even if it was just to give a wave and a smile. Derrick was enrolled at MTC and was enthusiastically preparing to begin classes in January. His plans were to transfer to Winthrop and major in Mass Communications. He knew the lyrics to so many songs and all the modern dances. His body movements were so smooth. He was personable and had an awesome speaking voice. He was exited about the things that he would be able to do in that field. He was perfect for it. Derrick was strong in spirit. He had a strong mind, was very focused and self-motivated. Derrick was more than just a little brother or a boy friend or son or friend, he was an example of love and he was developing into a wonderful man. Derrick was genuine and didn’t forget his promises. He acted most noble this past spring when he kept a promise to his older sister that she would be his date to his senior prom because she did not experience prom when she was in high school. He bought her the most beautiful white dress, ordered himself a white tux and they were a beautiful pair. We were so happy for him that he was able to experience his senior prom and it meant so much to him that he enjoyed it with his big sis. He was so thoughtful and practical and was a great role model and nurturer to his nephews and nieces. He spent allot of his time being a wonderful babysitter for his older sisters Phoebe and Zion he would have both of their sons Cassius Jacobs and Carter Prescott. Carter was a new addition to the family and although he was only two and a half months he responded to Derrick’s voice or presence by laughing and smiling. The excitement he shared and expressed for his uncle was extremely genuine but that is the effect Derrick, “Deechimo,” had on everyone he met or even spoke with. To sum it all up in his own words, “I am Determined, delightful, devoted Encouraging Reassuring Resilient Innovative Courageous Kindred” We all loved and cherished Derrick We can’t wait to see you again.
