Harry J Joyner

Harry Joseph Joyner entered this world December 31,1939, in Columbia, South Carolina. Harry was the sixth of nine children of the late Ernest Henry Joyner, Jr., and Hattie Belle Woodson Joyner.At birth, Harry suffered a cerebral hemorrhage which left him profoundly deaf and partially blind. Thus Harry, with God’s Blessings, had to learn to navigate this world with the help of others to make choices for him. He was Blessed with a sweet personality; easy going, beautiful smile, loved to hold and kiss babies. Harry taught his little brother, Arthur, how to ride a bicycle and he volunteered his services as Arthur’s protector on the playground. In his later years, Harry especially enjoyed Saturday outings with his family. These always began with a relaxing car ride with his sister, Helen, which included trips to the barber shop; and pop-up visits to the homes of his sister, Dorothy (Bennie) and his brother, Frank (Queen). The Saturday outings included a pit stop for burgers, fries and cokes. After the death of his mother, Harry spent most holidays with his sister, Dorothy (Bennie). These simple joys and pleasures seemed very satisfying to Harry. No one can claim to have found a greater inner peace or a greater acceptance of life than Harry. He learned early the very valuable lessons of doing more with less and of accepting whatever God had in store for him. In addition to his parents, Harry was preceded in death by two brothers: Major Ernest H. Joyner III; and Frank E. Joyner. Four sisters: Betty D. Vereen; Helen Bibby; Dorothy J. Bracken; and Sherry A. Bookert. Harry leaves to cherish his memory, two brothers: Arthur (Michelle) Joyner, Cincinnati, Ohio and James (Caroll) Joyner, El Paso, Texas. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Cousin Mary Boykin and her nieces: Ginger, Amber, Ashley, Arica, and Adriene. Cousin Mary and family members visit Harry and her son Darrell twice per week, bringing homemade meals and other goodies. Harry will also be missed by his friends and staff at The Willow House, and Palms (Midland Center), where he lived most of his life. Harry’s family found great pleasure in him and enjoyed being in his presence. May God’s eternal peace rest with Harry.
