Hattie Brown White Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Hattie B. White, 94, widow of the late, Jimmie S. White, departed this earthly life on Sunday January 4, 2015 at her residence in Sumter. Born in Sumter County on August 15, 1920, she was one of six children born to the late William and Lena Canty Brown. Hattie began her Christian journey early in life as a member of Hopewell Baptist Church, Dalzell, SC. After marrying Mr. Jimmie, she joined St. Luke A.M.E. Church and was a faithful member. She shared her gifts and talents and served in many ministries to include: Ushering, The Missionary Society, The Gospel Choir and the Boy Scouts. Hattie was employed with School District #2, Shaw Heights Elementary for more than twenty years, until retirement. Ms. White was also a member of The Order of Eastern Star, Catchall Chapter # 315. Hattie had a passion for cooking and serving. She loved feeding people; she met no strangers and had a lot of little wisdom saying and clichés, such as, “Use your head for more than a hat rack and every tub has to sit on its own bottom.” To know her was to love her and she will be missed by many. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three children: Beulah White Page, Samuel White, Jr., and an adopted son Isaac White, Jr.; two sisters: Beulah Green and Queen Esther Jenkins; three brothers: Edden, Sidney and Manning Brown. Those left to cherish precious memories are three daughters: Rebecca White Hall, Rose Marie (Ernest) Pollard, and Deborah (Claude) Helton all of Sumter, SC; three sons: William White, John (Ruth) White, of Sumter, SC and Edward (Sussie) White, Columbia, SC; 22 grandchildren, three of whom she raised as her own: John McGregor, Wanda McGregor and Shamace Phillips; a daughter in-law, Linwood Canty White of Sumter, SC ; 24 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
