Ida Carter Harmon

Ida Carter Harmon was born October 17, 1913, in Greenwich, New Jersey. She was the youngest of three surviving children born to the late Edward James Carter and Emma Jane Cuff Carter. when Ida was eight years old, she moved to Bridgton, New Jersey, where she spent the majority of her young life. She graduated from Bridgton High School. Ida met WilliamBrown, in Kingston, New York; they were married in 1935 and were blessed with two beautiful bundles of joy. In 1946, Ida met Herman Harmon, they were married in 1952. They spent forty-five wonderful years together. Ida had a remarkable life. She experienced numerous career opportunities: A waitress, caterer and she even worked in a defense plant; she was employed as an administrative assistant for the Department of Social Services in New York for seventeen years. She also had the priviledge of being President of the supervisor's Postal Auxiliary, where her territory spannded from Buffalo, NY to Manhattan, NY. After Ida moved to South Carolina, she became a member of The Church of the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church. One of Ida's most memorable experiences was being able to attend a leadership conference at a local college in Madison, Wisoncin, for six weeks. During those six weeks, she learned new initiative techniques to share with her work union in New York. She truly loved that experience; it was one that she always treasured. Ida was willing to give a helping hand and being supportive. She particularly enjoyed meeting new people, travelling, crocheting, and also gardening. Ida traveled extensively throughout her life. Some of her most memoraable vacations were spent in Guyana, South America, touring the Eastern Coast of Canada and visiting almost every island in the Caribbean. Ida said "Life taught me to appreciate the good times; it has given me strenght to get through the tought times too". Her life's mottoe was "To be as helpful to everyone as I can, and try to be a ray of sunshine on a cloudy day". Ida leaves behind cherishing memories to: her son, William H. (Mary Alice) Brown, Jr. of Columbia, SC; her daughter, Mrs. Shirley Marie Roberts of Johnson City, NY; six grandchildren, William James (Skipper) Brown, Stacy Norton, Crystal Brown, Michael Brown, Adrianne Williams and William Brown, III; great grandchildren; nieces; nephews and a host of other loving relatives and friends.
