Irene Kelley

Irene was born on January 19, 1944, in New Haven, Connecticut, to Adele Peterson Walker and Alex Walker. She was the eldest of the Walker sisters and a guiding light to her beloved younger sisters, Alexis Iona (“Jackie”) and Joan Sineta. From childhood through adulthood, the three shared a bond rooted in love, loyalty, laughter, and unwavering support. Irene’s role as the big sister extended far beyond her birth order. She was a confidante, protector, encourager, and lifelong friend to Jackie and Joan. Irene attended Richland County District One Schools (RCSD One) and later matriculated at Bennett College in Greensboro, North Carolina, where she met her best friend and future husband, Gerald Oakley Kelley. They were married in 1965 and together became devoted parents to two sons, Christopher Michael and Gerald Brian Kelley. She completed her graduate work at the University of South Carolina in Education and proudly served as an educator in RCSD One. Irene taught at W. A. Perry Middle School, St. Andrews Middle School, and C.A. Johnson High School, where she also served as a cheerleading coach. Even after retirement, her passion for education continued as she faithfully returned to the classroom as a substitute teacher. Irene and Gerald were mentors to countless students and athletes. Two young people, Kim Jenkins and Kobe Reese, became cherished members of their family through their mentorship. Irene was raised in Second Calvary Baptist Church and later became a devoted member of Northminster Presbyterian Church. There she faithfully served as a deacon, elder, Vacation Bible School teacher, adult chorus member, liturgist, vestry member, and committee servant among other roles. Anyone who knew Irene admired her zest for life and her unwavering commitment to excellence. She gave one thousand percent to everything she pursued, always willing to lend a helping hand. She was an active volunteer and leader in her community and participated in several organizations, including Jack and Jill of America, Inc., where she served as chapter president, The Red Hatters, and numerous bridge clubs. Irene especially treasured her years with Gerald attending football games as he coached. Her greatest joy was being “Uhmee” to her adored granddaughter, Bianca, daughter of Christopher and his late wife, Selina. Irene is survived by her loving husband, Gerald Oakley Kel- ley; sons, Christopher Michael Kelley of Columbia, South Carolina and Gerald Brian Kelley of Charlotte, North Carolina; sisters, Alexis Iona (Charles) Bolden of Alexandria, VA and Joan Sineta Walker of Colum- bia, South Carolina; granddaughter, Bianca Kelley; brother-in- law, Ronald Maxwell (Gail) Kelley; sister-in-law, Vicky Lynette Kelley (Lowell) James; nephews, Alex Lamar Davis, Anthony Che Bolden and Kevin Alexander Davis; niece, Dr. Kelly Michelle Bolden, and her cherished friend of seventy-one years, Ruth Louise James, along with a host of extended family, friends, former students, and all those whose lives she impacted. Irene’s life was a living testimony of faith, service, and love. Her legacy will continue through every student she inspired, every life she uplifted, and every heart she touched.
