Margaret Pearson Lewis

Mrs. Margaret P. Lewis was born on January 29, 1921 in Columbia, South Carolina. Aunt Margaret (as she was called by her nieces and nephews) entered into eternal life on April 14, 2013. She was the youngest daughter of the late Reverend Simon and Agnes Martin Pearson. She was educated in the Richland County public school system and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. She was also a graduate of Benedict College. Margaret was a life long member of First Calvary Baptist Church. She was active in several ministries including the Senior Choir, Church Aid, Pulpit Aid, Senior Missionary Society and Fruit of the Spirit. Her civic affiliations included Life member of Beta Beta Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Columbia Benedict College Alumni Club, Benedict College National Alumni Association, Queen Esther Chapter of Eastern Star #1, Ladies Auxiliary Post No. 4262 of VFW, Richland County retired Educators, Happy Hatter Chapter of Red Hat Society and National Council of Negro Women Inc. Margaret's teaching career included F.C. Benson Elementary, Booker T. Washington High School and retiring from Caughman Road Middle School. Margaret loved teaching and motivating all of her students. During her golden years, she cherished visits with former students and learning about their families and all their accomplishments. Mrs. Lewis loved flowers, music and travelling with her husband. She was committed to the United Martin Family Reunion and the Pearson Family Reunion. She enjoyed sharing her words of wisdom and encouragement to always trust in God with family and friends. As well as her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Leola Dorch and Elizabeth Keith; and brother, Thomas W. Pearson. She leaves cherished memories with her beloved husband, Andrew J. Lewis; daughter, Andrea L. Jones; loving grandson, David S. Lewis; granddaughter, Deborah E. Lewis; three great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Helen Lewis, Marie Wilson and Rosa L. (Reverend George) Manigo; brothers-in-law, Sam Lewis, Charles (Eunice) Lewis, Reverend W.T. (Effie) Lewis and James Lewis; nieces, Tomalyn (Reverend Larry) Hall and Valeria Mack; as well as a host of other nieces; nephews, other loving relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm Saturday at First Calvary Baptist Church, with interment to follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The casket will be placed in the church for viewing at 1:00 pm until the time of the service.
