Mrs. Mary Ellen Britton

A time to be born.. Mrs. Mary Ellen Willliams Britton, was born on September 24, 1942 to the late Wallace Williams, Sr. and Mary Eliza Sheriff Williams Seymore, she departed this earthly life on Saturday, November 9, 2024. She was one of thirteen children reared in a Christian home, under the guidance of her loving and devoted parents who reinforced the importance of God’s presence in her life from an early age. A time to grow… Mary Ellen attended the public schools of Sumter County and was a 1962 graduate of Eastern High School. In 1965 she was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart and the love of her life Harold Britton. To this union one deeply devoted son Keith E. Britton was born. Since Mary Ellen and her sister Ida Mae married brothers, she loved Henrietta Michelle (Reverend Archie) Temoney, Bruce (Pama) Britton and Lisa Britton as though they were her own. In addition, she had a special niece and nephew Ebony Williams and her son Rashaan that she treated as grandchildren. Later in life, she was blessed to serve in the surrogate grandparent role to Jamonte Temoney. A time to live… After graduating from high school, Mary Ellen left for New York and enrolled in business school. She enjoyed learning and easily mastered office business tasks and procedures. Upon her return to South Carolina, she used her organizational skills to help everyone in need. Her talents were endless, and she utilized every skillset to bring comfort and joy to the lives of her family and friends. Whether it is was cooking a fabulous meal, decorating a home, providing sound advice, assisting the elderly, babysitting, helping with business matters, or just listening attentively to your concerns, she was a rock for many who never wavered in her devotion to help you in any way she could. A time to worship… She was a member of Beulah African Methodist Episcopal Church. She was one of the founding members of the Beulah Harmonaires Choir with her signature song Sending Up My Timber and an original member of the Beulah Mass Choir. She served as a Church School Teacher, Vice President of Stewardess Board, former local Young People’s Division (YPD) Director, worked with the Women’s Missionary Society and supported the Lay Organization. A time to celebrate her life… Those left to thank God for her presence and cherish her memory include her husband of 59 years Harold Britton and her son Keith Britton; sisters, Eva Mae Hambrick, Gwendolyn Alice Hicks, and Salley Seymore; brothers, Wallace (Gloria) Williams, Johnny Lee Williams, Joe (Lillarweise) Seymore, and Thomas Earl Seymore; sisters-in-law, Barbara Williams, Victoria (Elias) Prioleau, Louise Williams, Mildred Britton, Fannie Britton, special friends she thought of as sisters, Annie Mae Temoney, Lucy McClary, Sylvia Singleton, and Delphine Cunningham; godchildren Angel Temoney, Shenika Tomlin Waring, Renay Britton Burchell, Waltene Britton Valentine, Gregory L. Williams and Jeremy Dixon; volunteer godchildren Ashlee Sims and Riquelle Sims, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers Henry Lee Williams, Sr., NeGrant Williams, Wilbert Lee Williams, Lewis “Tubby” Williams; J. C. Jones; Reverend Dr. Charles H. Davis; sister, Ida Mae Britton; sisters-in-law, Lottie Olivia Williams, Elouise Williams, Virginia Britton China, Catherine Brunson Wheele; and brother-in-law Henry Lee Britton.
