Mrs. Sarah Lee Wells

Sarah Lee Wells, affectionately known as Mother Wells, was born in Lone Star, Calhoun County, South Carolina on May 11, 1930 to the late Rev. George Brown. She was the first born in a large , loving family with two sisters, Georgia Mae; Louise and three brothers:Moses, George Jr. and Joshua. She attended school in Lone Star, South Carolina . In 1945, at the tender age of 15 years old. Sarah Lee moved to Harlem New York to begin her new life in thee big apple. Coming into her own as a strong and independent woman at the cusp of the Women's Liberation Movement. Sarah worked in several industries;, from domestic work to fashion design as a self-taught seamstress. She loved fashion and often designed her own clothes. In 1948, she married Nehemiah Jr. Wells. Their loving union created three beautiful boys: Nehemiah, Jr., Matthew and Micah. She enjoyed spending time with family, and was a no-nonsense mother raising three boys and took pride in teaching them how to clean and cook. A Preachers kid with both feet firmly planted in Christian Faith, Sarah became a member of Washington Temple Baptist Church in the 1960's and sang beautifully on the church gospel choir. She also taught Sunday School. In addition to being a mother to her three boys, she was known throughout the New York area for mentoring young people and over the years became known as "Mother Wells." After the passing of her parents she took the helm as the matriarch of the family and was nicknamed, "Sister" by her siblings. She was the rock of the family, a second mother, not only to her siblings, but to her extended family and friends as well. In 1997, she relocated to Seattle Washington after falling in love with the city during her visits with her son Michah., who was already living there. Mother Wells brought her loving infectious smile, wisdom and warm hugs to the city and her new church community in Seattle. She latersettled in Yakima Washington,where she lived out the rest fo her life, and conatnued to bring light and love to everyone she came in contact with. She will always be remembered for her infectious smile, warm, hug, invaluable words of wisdom and guidance. She is predeceased by her parents , Rev. George Brown,Sr. and Eliza Brown; one son , Micah Wells, one sister, Georgia Mae and three brothers: Moses, George, and Joshua. She leaves to cherish her memories, her pride and joy; Nehemiah (Maria) Wells,Jr., Matthew Wells, one sister, Louise Ray,, numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and a host of other nieces , nephews; relatives and friends.
