Mr. Sherman Edward Van Dyke Jr.

SHERMAN EDWARD VAN DYKE, JR. – 65, departed this earthly life on May 30, 2023, at Dorn VA Medical Center. Born in Indianapolis, Indiana on October 17, 1957, he was the oldest of six children of Sherman Edward Van Dyke, Sr. and Marlene D. Banner. Sherman was baptized at St. Rita Roman Catholic Church in May 1960. He was a 1976 graduate of Broad Ripple High School, Indianapolis, Indiana. Sherman’s love of music paralleled his passion for playing. He was a gifted bass and guitar player who started in the garage of a neighbor and continued playing with various local groups throughout the years. He enlisted in the United States Army on August 31, 1979. After receiving an Honorable Discharge, Sherman later pursued a career in Public Safety. His public safety career started as a Firefighter at West Columbia Fire Department and later transferred to the West Columbia Police Department to become a Police Officer. After several years with West Columbia Police Department, he sought employment with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department and was hired as a Deputy, where he served under Sheriff Sloan. After five years of service with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, his heart called him back to firefighting. He accepted employment with Columbia Fire Department, in Columbia, South Carolina. He moved up through the ranks and retired as a Fire Equipment Operator (Engineer). He served from September 28, 1992 – October 30, 2007. Sherman was a member of the Modern Free and Accepted Masons of the World, Inc., Golden Square – Lodge No. 283. Certified Law Enforcement Officer, May 1988. Member of South Carolina Firemen’s Association. His two favorite past-times were riding his Harley and sitting down to play his bass guitars. Sherman is predeceased by his father Sherman Edward Van Dyke, Sr., and one son Brandon Michael Van Dyke. Sherman is survived by his wife, Vonda K. Scott-Van Dyke, with which they shared thirty-eight years. His mother, Marlene Delores Banner Van Dyke (Indianapolis, IN); Aunt, Constance Brown (Indianapolis, IN); brothers, Herman (Judy) Van Dyke and Derek Van Dyke (Indianapolis, IN); sisters, Karol Van Dyke and Karla (Vincent) Bebley (Indianapolis, IN), Lorine “Rennie” Van Dyke (Indianapolis, IN); Mother-in-Law, Marian R. Scott (Columbia, SC); Brother-in-Laws, Kenmaynard Scott, Jr. (Ladson, SC); and Edward Scott (Columbia, SC). His children: Brandy Nicole Van Dyke (Indianapolis, IN); Stepdaughter, Kaylenne S. (Herbert) Brown, (Corning, NY); Bryan Edward Van Dyke (Columbia, SC); Brooke Michelle Van Dyke (Charlotte, NC); Morgan B. (Daniel) Van Dyke- Martin (Columbia, SC); Brandon Darnell Van Dyke (Columbia, SC); Shane Lawrence Van Dyke (Fort Drum, NY); Sheldon Edward (Chrystalline) Van Dyke (Camden, SC); Brittani Marie Van Dyke (Columbia, SC); and Brandt Maynard Scott-Van Dyke (Tuscaloosa, AL). Nine grandchildren: Morge’n, Micah, Mackenzie, Leilani, Easton, Cash, Preston, Laila, and Khalil; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.
