Mrs. Bettie L. Stover, departed this earthly life to be with the Lord on Friday, September 1, 2017. Born on August 8, 1930 in Sumter, South Carolina, she was a daughter to the late Charles Haskell Logan and the late Ruth Kibler Logan. In 1954, she was united in marriage to the late James Wendell Stover, Jr. Mrs. Stover’s education included attending Savage Glover Elementary School from grades 1-6, where her Aunt Alice was her 1st grade teacher. From 7th – 11th grade she attended Lincoln High School. During her formative years, she worked in The Green Leaf restaurant owned by her father’s mother Helen “Big Momma” Jennings and her father. Mrs. Stover began her college career at South Carolina State College in South Carolina, graduating from Howard University in Washington, D. C. where she studied pre-med and received a Bachelor of Science. After graduating from Columbia College with a Master of Science, she became a teacher and taught in the Sumter School District at Lincoln High School, Millwood Elementary School and Morris College. In later years, she and her husband had a successful real estate business, Stover Real Estate, which greatly benefited the Sumter community. Mrs. Stover was a devoted member of Mt. Pisgah A.M.E. Church in Sumter where she served faithfully in many capacities including: Class Leader, a member of the Steward Board, the Stewardess Board, the Women’s Missionary Society, Co-Chairperson of the New Horizon Ministry, a Girl Scout leader, and a member of the Lay Organization. Bettie L. Stover was also a life member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. An avid gardener, she loved to work in her flower garden and was a committed member of the Green Thumb Garden Club in Sumter. A vibrant, loving, sweet, kind, gentle, strong, firm, fashionable and very particular woman, Mrs. Stover left an imprint on many lives. Everywhere the family went, someone was bound to say, “Stover? Is your mother Bettie Stover? She was my biology teacher.” or, “Mrs. Stover was the best teacher I had.” and, “She is a sweet woman.” Mrs. Bettie Logan Stover was a devoted woman of God and revered her family. She leaves to treasure beautiful memories: two sons James W. Stover, III (Ronalda) and Charles L. Stover, Sr. (Lizmayrem) all of Sumter; a brother Charles “Uncle Brother” Logan (Maureen) Brigantine, NJ; a sister, Gloria L. Farmer, Sumter; three grandchildren: Morgan C. Stover, New York, NY, Megan E. Stover, Charleston, SC and Charles L. Stover, Jr., Sumter; niece Patricia Huff, Durham, NC, nephews: Michael Cobb and Charles Cobb of Washington, D. C., and James Cobb of Burtonsville,Md.; a cherished family member Georgeanna Smith, Sumter; her devoted caregiver Jamaica Howard; as well as a host of other relatives and dear friends. Her kind smile and generous and caring heart will be missed. We love you Mom, Grandma Bettie. Thank you for your love and wisdom that helped to shape and mold who we all are. We all share a part of you. Rest now… We love you.
