Mrs. Betty Louise Scott Evans

October 17, 1936 - January 30, 2022

Open the gates, so that the righteous nation that keeps faith may enter in. Those of steadfast mind you keep in peace—in peace because they trust in you. Trust in the Lord forever, for in the Lord God, you have an everlasting rock. Isaiah 26:2-3 Betty Scott Evans was born to the late Watkins and Alice Scott on October 17, 1936, in Sumter. She exchanged time for eternity on Sunday, January 30, 2022. Education and Accomplishments: After graduating from Lincoln High in 1956, Mrs. Evans continued her education at Morris College. She earned a Bachelor of Art’s degree in English. In addition, she furthered her education at various colleges and universities. She was an educator and librarian for over thirty years in Sumter, Lee, Clarendon, and Chesterfield Counties. Church Affiliations: After marriage, Mrs. Evans joined Sumter Second Presbyterian Church. She served in various organizations and as officers of the church. Some of the positions included: Sunday School Teacher, Usher, Deacon, and Elder on the Presbytery level. Elder Evans served in various committees and boards such as Christian Education Committee, Camping Committee, and she was a Certified Lay Minister. Activities: Betty Evans was a part of “Friends of the Library” and a volunteer Chaplain at Tuomey Hospital. She enjoyed reading, collecting books, being a storyteller and shopping. Family Memories: Her memories will be cherished by her sons: Thomas W. Evans and Sherman S. Evans, daughters: Ta Mara Evans and Hope E. Evans; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; one brother, David (Thelma) Scott; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Evans, sister, Ethel Jones and a special family member Ivan Evans. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Second Presbyterian Church (USA), P. O. Box 1669, Sumter.
