Clarence “CJ” James Davis, Sr. entered into eternal rest on September 3, 2016, at the Forest Pines Retirement Home in Columbia, SC. He was born in Hemingway, South Carolina on May 20, 1930, to the late Charlie and Alberta Davis. Educated in the South Carolina Public School system of Hemingway, he was determined to build a better life for himself. With that drive in mind, Mr. Davis enlisted in the United States Army where he faithfully served his nation for 28 years, ultimately earning the rank of Master Sergeant. Upon his retirement from military service, Mr. Davis worked at the Richland County Detention Center, the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, and the Richland County Family Court. As a young man, Mr. Davis aligned with Jeremiah United Methodist Church in Johnsonville, SC, but after relocating to Columbia, SC, he found a church home at Reid Chapel AME Church. There, Mr. Davis served as a steward, as a member of several choirs: the Senior Choir; the Jubilee Choir; and the Male Chorus, and as a member of the Board of VV Reid Early Childhood Center. He was appointed Steward Emeritus by Reverend James R. Glover. In addition to his parents, Mr. Davis was preceded in death by several family members, including sisters and brothers-in-law Frances (Robert “Doc”) Donnelly of Johnsonville, SC; Cleo (Thomas) McGirt also of Johnsonville, SC; and Olar Ruth (Erskine) Tucker of River Mills, WI. He was also preceded in death by three other inlaws: Bubba (Ras) Rasberry; Carolyn Rasberry; and Edward J. (Ras) Rasberry, all of Orangeburg, SC. Mr. Davis leaves to cherish precious memories his wife of 59 years, Ruby R. Davis; 5 children: Clarence (Avis) Davis Jr. of Hopkins, SC, Wayne E. Davis of Tacoma, WA, Gerry (La’Tonia) L. Davis of Knightdale, NC, Phyllis E. and Peytrienna Y. Davis, both of Columbia, SC; two sister-in-laws: Mattie R. Ulmer of Beaufort, SC, and Loretta R. Herrin of Columbia, SC; 7 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
