Clarence Reid

February 28, 1943 - July 8, 2017

Clarence Reid transitioned from this earthly realm to his heavenly home on Saturday July 8, 2017, at the WJB Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia, South Carolina. Born February 28, 1943, in Moncks Corner, SC, Clarence was a son of the late George Reid, Sr., and Elizabeth Manigault Reid. After matriculating in Berkeley County public schools, Clarence graduated from Claflin University (Class of 1966) and South Carolina State University where he earned a Master's degree. Clarence was a member of the United States Army, serving in both the regular branch and the Reserves. He was an educator, ultimately retiring from Richland School District 2. His devotion to education even followed him in his spiritual life where Clarence served as the Church School Superintendent at St. James AME Church. Additionally, he served as a Trustee, a Steward, a member of the Choir, and a member of the Men's Club. Always active in the community, Clarence was a member of the Alumni Association of Claflin University, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., a Department of Juvenile Justice Mentor, a lifetime member of the VFW, and the Education Association. In addition to his parents, Clarence was preceded in death by seven siblings: Peter Reid, Edward Joseph Reid, Helen Lee Darby, Ruthie Mae Reid Robinson, Geneva Copeland, Fred S. Reid, and Leroy Haynes, Sr. He leaves to cherish precious memories his wife, Carolyn Smith-Reid; four children: Katrina Rabb, Anthony Gibbs, Darius (Allison) Reid, and Kamane (Ruby) Askins; two stepchildren: Dr. Monique (Jason) Williams and Darrell Smith; sixteen grandchildren; two sisters: Verdelle (Bristol) Williams and Viola Rogers; a brother, George (Lillie Mae) Reid; and a host of other relatives and friends who will miss him dearly.
