Dale Jared Taylor departed this earthly life Friday December 8, 2017 at Palmetto Health Tuomey in Sumter. Born on March 18, 1959, he was the youngest son of the late Wilfred Taylor and Naomi Black Taylor. Dale attended St. Anne’s and St. Jude Catholic School graduating in 1978. He attended the University of South Carolina-Sumter, majoring in history and political science. He proudly served as Student Government President during his time there. Mr. Taylor’s distinguished voice was appreciated and highly respected throughout his notable career. He began his radio career at WWDM in Sumter and NPR in Columbia. Mr. Taylor was the first Black man in Chicago to announce classical music on WFMF as well as interview the legendary opera singer Leontine Price and Julia Child on NPR- WEEZ in Chicago, Illinois. His multifaceted career segwaied to rock station Q101 in Chicago, Ill. Dale was an avid gardener, nurturing fruit trees, vegetables, and herbs. His zest for life included a love of art, especially oil paintings, African art, and sculpture. Dale had a passion for cooking inspired by Julia Child. As a result of his fascination in history, he created extraordinary experiences for himself and others that were privileged to experience his incredible music collection. His father preceded him in death. Survivors include: his loving mother Naomi Black Taylor of the home, sister Barbara Jean Taylor, both of Sumter; a brother (Ret.) Petty Officer First Class Michael Joseph (Christine) Taylor, Norfolk, VA; an aunt Delma Seals, Laham, MD; three nieces: Jazmine Allison, Charlotte, NC, Carmone Davis, Orangeburg, SC and Sabra Taylor, Columbia, MD.; one nephew, Michael Taylor, Columbia, MD; devoted partner John Cogner, Sumter, SC; very special cousins, Patricia K. Sanders and Cukye Nelson-Khalid, both of Sumter and a host of other relatives and dear friends. The family would appreciate donations made to The National Kidney Foundation at www.kidney.org/support.
