Donald Hampton Miller was called from earthly labor to heavenly reward Friday morning, April 20, 2017, at the WJB Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia surrounded by his family. Born October 25, 1937, in Charlottesville, Virginia, he was a son of the late Curley Hampton Miller and Virginia Smith Miller. Donald was educated in the public schools of Sumter County, graduated from Lincoln High School in the Class of 1955 before earning an Associate’s Degree from Midlands Technical College. Donald proudly served his nation in the United States Army, receiving several honors including the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with palm, Meritorious Service Medal, and Bronze Star during the Vietnam War, and he retired in 1975, at which time he began employment with Cooper Tools as a machinist. Donald married the former Estella Joyce Houston, and together they raised six children. Well-traveled due to his time in the military, Donald enjoyed Germany and France (particularly Paris) as well as golfing, reading, fishing, painting, and photography. It was also common to see Donald at the local bowling alley getting some time in on the lanes. A man of strong, Christian faith, Donald served St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church in many capacities including: Parish Council, Knights of Peter Claver, Men’s Choir, Joint Choir, a founding member of the Men’s Bible Study, Usher, and Men’s Club as well as cooking for church activities. He was also a member of the Fort Jackson Golf Association as well as the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). In addition to his parents, Donald was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Daniels, and two brothers: Roland H. Miller and Curley Miller, Jr. Donald leaves to cherish precious memories his wife Estella of the home; three daughters: Kimberly Patton, Endeliza (Nicky) Devane, and Andrea (Ugochukwu) Eke, all of Columbia; two sons: Darryl Brown and Clifford Patton, both of Kentucky; granddaughter, Monique Stokes, of the home; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; three sisters: June (Harvey Lee) Albritton, Marcina McDuffie, and Regina Holland; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
