Mrs. Doris Mae Peterson

Doris M. Peterson departed this earthly life on Sunday, January 2, 2022 on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Doris M. Peterson was born Dora Mae Wilson on June 26, 1925 in Dothan, Alabama. She was the sixth of seven children of the late Lonnie and Vinnie Wilson. Doris was educated at Dothan High School and later met and married the love of her life George Bell Peterson, Sr. in Birmingham, AL in May of 1946. Doris and George migrated to Chicago, IL and to their loving union five children were born: George Peterson, Jr., Coleman Peterson, Sandre Gavin, Bonnie Peterson and Gail Benson. After migrating to Chicago, Doris was employed as a Stone Setter for Jewels by Bogoff Jewelers. She then went on to work as a Satellite Operator in downtown Chicago and later assisted patients at Roseland Community Hospital as a Patient Representative. She retired as an Administrative Data Entry Aide from the Department of Employment Security. She loved gardening, reading and looked forward to the family reunions that were held. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband George Bell Peterson, Sr. in June of 1988 and siblings: M.C. Wilson, Willie C. Wilson, Arthur C. Wilson, Ruby Nell Wilson-Ford, Beatrice Wilson-Northern and Mattie Bell Wilson-Reynolds. Left to celebrate her legacy and cherish precious memories in addition to her five children are her devoted daughter in-law Shirley “Peaches” Peterson and son in-law, William “Bill” Gavin; grandchildren Timothy Peterson, Thuran Peterson and wife Tasha, Chevelle Smith, Demetrius Peterson, Rana Barclay and husband Andy Barclay, Collin Peterson, Curtis Gavin and Nora Gavin and JoAnne Benson; great-grandchildren: Jason Benson, Jr., Terrell Gavin, Coleman Ian Lovett Barclay and Theodore “Theo” Henry David Barclay; loving great-great grandchildren and a host of cousins and friends.
