June 11, 1932 - December 29, 2020
Mrs. Edith Lucille Roberts Shephard departed this life on Tuesday, December 29, 2020. Edith transitioned peacefully at home in Lewes, Delaware where she resided with her daughter and son-in-law. She was the seventh child of Abraham and Ruth Hemphill Roberts, born on June 11, 1932, in Columbia, SC. Edith graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1950, and worked many years for Caison's Upholstery Shop. Edith married Howard J. Shephard and to that union one daughter was born. In 1963, they relocated to East Orange, NJ. She worked as a seamstress for Standard Glove Company until she and Howard returned to South Carolina in 1986. Upon returning to Columbia, she was employed by Cooper's Interior Decorators. After some time there, she and Howard built their home in Eastover, SC. Once settled there, she started her own business making slip covers and window treatments. Edith left South Carolina in June of 2018 to reside with her daughter and son-in-law in Delaware. Edith knew her way around the kitchen and was well known for her cakes and pies. She absolutely loved to dance and sing and up until March of 2020 she was the belle of the ball at her senior center. She kept us all laughing with a ton of quips and quotes that she would recite, such as: "I'm a little piece of leather but I'm well put together" or her favorite "You don't know dough from batter!" Edith loved her family and she loved her church. You could always call on her if you needed something. She would sometimes fuss the whole time but always came through. In addition to her parents, Edith was preceded in death by her husband Howard Shephard; and nine siblings: William Roberts, Abraham Roberts, Marion Roberts, Major Roberts, Elizabeth Roberts, Frances Roberts, Mae Drew, Wilhemina Bell, and Nell Evans. Edith leaves to cherish her precious memories, her daughter and son-in-law: Sheral and Arnold Dyess of Lewes, DE; her grandson Warren Dyess of Carteret, NJ; her siblings: sister Ruthine Shiver and brother Charles (Geneva) Roberts of Columbia, SC; stepdaughters: Brenda Wallace, Lynda Shephard and Jeri Witherspoon, all of Columbia, SC; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
