Ernest G Govan Sr
July 11, 1937 - January 11, 2016
On Monday afternoon, January 11, 2016, Ernest General Govan, Sr. took his last breath and went home to be with his Lord and Savior. He had spent the last eleven plus years in declining health. Prior to being admitted in the hospital, Ernest was an active usher and member of the Columbia Church of Christ, where in the fall of 1998 he was baptized into Christ. Though only 78 years young, Ernest lived a full life. He was the 7th of 10 children born to Harry and Sarah Govan. He served his country in the Air Force for over 23 years, fathered 5 children, earned a BA in Criminal Justice from South Carolina State University and went on to become a City Councilman for the Town of St Matthews, where he had spent his formative years. He enjoyed talking about politics, his time in the military and his family. He is survived by three (3) children: Ernest (Lynn) Govan Jr – N Charleston SC, Eva Ladell- Little Elm, TX, Joseph (Andrea) Govan- Ladson SC. Four (4) Grandchildren: Melissa Govan- N Charleston SC, Jonathan Govan – Atlanta GA, Whitney Govan- N Charleston SC and Blake Ladell – Little Elm TX. Five (5) Sisters: Blanche Glover- Columbia SC, Frances (Leland) Randolph – Brooklyn NY, Sarah Rhymes- Orangeburg SC, Berthina Prater- Orangeburg SC and Queenie Howell- Seattle WA, along with a host of nieces, cousins and nephews all left to cherish his memory. His impact on the lives of those who had the opportunity to know him is immeasurable. His smile, quick wit and presence will be missed.
