SFC Freddie Hunter

June 2, 1930 - September 1, 2018

Sergeant First Class Freddie Hunter was called from labor to reward on Saturday, September 1, 2018, surrounded by family. Born June 2, 1930, in Valdosta, Georgia, he was the third of five children born to the late Aaron Hunter, Sr., and Essie B. Cooper Hunter. He joined the United States Army in January 1951. Freddie was a loyal soldier who took his Oath of Induction with total commitment to his responsibilities in service to his country. This was a task he did proudly for a total of twenty years, serving valiantly in Korea and Vietnam where he was awarded the Combat Medical Badge among other citations. After retirement from the Army, Freddie attended Midlands Technical College in Columbia earning an Associate’s Degree in Human Services. He was then employed with the Department of Corrections as a Medical Technician, where he remained for ten years. Following his second retirement, Freddie had more time to spend with various community service organizations. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4262 as well as the Disabled Veterans Association. He loved to fish and take morning walks. In addition to his parents, Freddie was preceded in death by three brothers: James L. (Mary) Hunter, Aaron (Paulette) Hunter, Jr., and Willie L. (Susie Mae) Hunter; a sister-in-law Rose Hunter; and a son, Bruce Hunter. He leaves to cherish precious memories his beloved wife of sixty-two years Marneise Hunter of the home; a daughter Merritt (Albert) Frederick of Columbia; a son Eric B. Hunter of Warner Robbins, Georgia; two granddaughters: Marnise (Alexey) Zaichik of Germany and Stephanie Mitnaul of Columbia; a grandson Stephen P. Mitnaul of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; a brother Abell Hunter of Columbia; and a host of other relatives and friends.
