Funeral services for Geraldine “Gerri” Carter Freeman, wife of Charles E. Freeman, will be held 11am Friday, July 8, 2016 at the Church of the Holy Comforter Episcopal, 213 N. Main St, Sumter. Interment will be held at Hillside Memorial Park, Caines Mill Rd., Sumter. The family will receive friends Thursday July 7, 2016 from 1-5pm followed by a family visitation from 6-8pm, at the Palmer Memorial Chapel, 304 S. Main St. Sumter. In lieu of flowers, memorials in memory of Gerri Freeman may be made to The Church of the Good Shepard Episcopal P.O.Box 1701, Sumter, 29151, or to a charity of your choice. Born in Birmingham, Alabama, Gerri was one of eight children, born to the late Walker T. Carter, Sr. and Amelia M. Walton Carter. Educated in the Birmingham Public School System she was a graduate of Miles College (Class of 1962) where she earned a BA degree in Biology; a Masters Degree from Georgia State University in Adult Education. She was an educator for over 33 years. Her teaching experience spanned from the US Virgin Islands to Sumter School District #17 grades 9-12, where she retired in June, 2000. She also taught several years in adult basic education. In addition to her teaching career, she was employed for over ten years as a real estate sales agent and nine years as a medical lab technician. She was a faithful member of Church of the Good Shepard Episcopal Church where her leadership roles included: ECW President, Sunday School Teacher, member of the choir, member of the Stewardship Committee, Vestry Member, Warden and Senior Warden, Christian Education advisor, Treasurer and Superintendent. In her spare time, she enjoyed volunteering at the South Sumter Resource Center, traveling and reading. She was devoted to her family, friends, students, and her church. On February 8, 1964, she was united in marriage to the love of her life,Charles E. Freeman and to their loving union three sons were born. Both served our country in the United States Air Force and they traveled extensively throughout England, US. Virgin Islands and the United States. Surviving: her husband, Charles E. Freeman of the home; three sons: Curtis C. (Lillian) Freeman of Ft. Washington, Md., Steven C. (Lisa) Freeman of Manassas, Va., Gerald R. Freeman of Gastonia, NC,; three grandchildren; one sister, Sandra Carter of Decatur, Ga.; and a host of other relatives and friends.
