Joe Davis, Jr., affectionately known as “Chuck”, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, May 30, 2019 at Prisma Health Tuomey in Sumter, South Carolina. Born on November 15, 1956 in Sumter County, he was the elder son of Katie Witherspoon Davis and the late Joe Davis, Sr. Mr. Davis was educated in the public schools of Sumter County and was a graduate of Sumter High School in the Class of 1975. He graduated “Magna Cum Laude” with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Mass Communications from Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1979. He was a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporate. In his early years, Joe joined Westminster Presbyterian Church, was baptized and served faithfully in The Young Adult Ministry. He was very active in the community. In his spare time, he voluntarily counseled and tutored many of the neighborhood youths. Mr. Davis was previously employed with South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice and Morris College in Sumter. “Chuck” had a zest for life. His hobbies included: dancing, which earned him the nickname “Joe Dancer” and played the drums in middle and in junior high school. He also, developed a championship football career that expanded through college, where he received numerous awards to include: All Area Conference, Best Defensive Back, Player of the Week and broke high school interception records, which earned him a football scholarship to Johnson C. Smith University. Joe was just a good example of how commitment, dedication and hard work can be rewarding. His presence will be dearly missed by his loving family, friends and associates. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his sister, Rosetta Davis Burson and brother, Clint Davis; his paternal grandparents, Willie and Dorcas Anderson Davis and maternal grandparents, Alexander , Sr. and Lucille Pearson Witherspoon. Those left to cherish his precious memories are: his beloved mother, Katie W. Davis; one daughter, NeShonda L. Parr of Irmo, SC; one grandson, Eric Jovari Burkett; one brother, Bruce (Briana) Davis Columbia, SC; five aunts, Lillie Mae McFadden, Sally W. Blocker, Robertha W. Leverette, all of Sumter, Deloris Witherspoon and Sarah Witherspoon of New York; three uncles, Ezekiel Witherspoon and Robert (Lorraine) Witherspoon, New York City and Leroy Grant of Columbia, SC; two nieces, Rochelsa C. Burson, and Delaya Jones both of Sumter; five nephews, Justin Burson, Cortez A. ( Santana) Farmer, De’ Angelon Johnson, Corbin Farmer and Daquan Jones; other special family members: Sister-in-law, Maebell Farmer and Shawn and Lavonda Johnson.
