John Lewis
November 18, 1937 - January 17, 2016
John Lewis, 78, was called home to his eternal rest on Sunday, January 17, 2016 at Palmetto Health Tuomey in Sumter. Born November 18, 1937, he was a son of the late Fleglar A. Lewis and Lucile E. Lewis. Mr. Lewis attended the public schools of Sumter County and later served his country in the Unites States Army from 1956-1958. Mr. Lewis was employed with Georgia Pacific and later the City of Sumter. His devoted service to the city, traveling to work on his bike, received special recognition from the City of Sumter and The Sumter Daily Item in 2006 for 40 years of service. John was recognized by the City of Sumter again for his faithful and loyal service after 50 years in December 2015. Mr. Lewis loved his job and co-workers. In his spare time, he enjoyed sitting on his porch, with his friends, reminiscing about past experiences. Favorite subjects included the history of Sumter as well as cowboy movies. He loved his family and he was there if anyone needed him. John was especially close to his sister Marie, who was more than just a sister. She was endearing and she was his everything. He leaves to cherish precious memories: two sisters, Beatrice Cranford of Texarkana, Texas and Anna Marie (Willie) Jenkins of Sumter, S.C.; two brothers, Joe (Doris) Lewis of Temple Hill, Md. and Matthew (Rosa) Lewis Sr. of Sumter, S.C.; one sister-in-law Minnie Lewis of Heightsville, Md.; one brother-in-law William Pearson of Sumter, S.C.; a special friend, Margie Vaughn and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
