Margaret Mills Bryant

Margaret Mills Bryant, 82, wife of the late Elight Bryant died on February 8, 2017, at her residence. Born in Richland County, she was the fourth of eleven children born to the late Arthur Mills Sr. and Gussie Bowman Mills. She was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School in the Class of 1952; Margaret later went on to earn a Bachelors of Art degree from Marymount Manhattan College and a Master’s degree from The University of South Carolina in Special Education. Mrs. Bryant was a lifelong, faithful member of Gill Creek Baptist Church where she served in various capacities including: Church Clerk; President and Secretary of the Missionary Ministry; Trustee Ministry; Christian Youth Ministry Advisor; member of the Women’s Ministry; and the Assistant Director of Gill Creek Daycare as well as participating in numerous ministries within the church. Mrs. Bryant was an educator who taught kindergarten and special education while residing in New York. In 1975, she relocated to Columbia and taught in Summerton, Richland, and Calhoun Counties until 1995 when she retired from the Calhoun County Schools ending a teaching career that spanned over thirty years. With her love for teaching, she tutored many students along the way. Her teaching career was on every level from preschool to college. Mrs. Bryant was a member of the National and State Teachers’ Association. Surviving are four children: Sharon (Willie Jr.) Grier of Columbia, Gregory (Meecha) Bryant of Indian Trail, NC, Alisa (Antonio Sr.) Haggins of Monroe, NC, and David Bryant of Columbia; a loving niece, Peri Jackson of Columbia; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; six siblings.
