Mrs. Mary Virginia King Gist was born in Columbia, South Carolina, on July 15, 1924, to the late Ralph King Sr. and Victoria Roberts and departed this earthly life on Tuesday, August 16, 2016, at Providence Hospital. She attended Waverly Elementary School and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1942. Mrs. Gist was a member of Chappelle Memorial A.M.E. Church for over sixty (60) years, serving as a faithful Chancellor Choir member, class leader, and Trustee Emeritus. Mrs. Gist was also instrumental in starting the church’s Floral Club. In 1979 she was chosen Woman of the Year at Chappelle Memorial A.M.E. Church, and she was also recognized by the Columbia District Lay Organization as a 2014 Unsung Hero. Mrs. Gist retired from McKesson Pharmaceutical Company in 1979 after more than thirty (30) years of service in a variety of capacities. She was also a dedicated Fairwold Precinct Poll Worker for over twenty-five (25) years. Mrs. Gist was also involved in several community clubs within her neighborhood. Her favorite pastime activities were gardening, cooking and traveling. Mrs. Gist was a member of several Prince Hall Affiliated Masonic organizations, to include the Queen Esther Chapter Number One: Order of the Eastern Star, The Cairo Court Number 125, and the C.C. Johnson Assembly Number One: Order of the Golden Circle (Charter Member) ( Past State Grand Loyal Lady Ruler). Mrs. Gist was married to Mr. Lomas Gist Sr., who preceded her in death in 2012; they were married for seventy-one (71) years. She was also preceded in death by her brother Ralph King Jr., and sisters Cecilia King, and Vermell King Hazzard. Mrs. Gist leaves to cherish her precious memories her two children: Lomas (Walla) Gist, Jr. of Elgin, SC, and Patricia Gist Coleman of Columbia, SC; five grandchildren: Ronald (Natalia) Coleman, Anthony (Shineka) Gist, Lomas Gist III, Anita James, and Donna Coleman-Barr; nine great-grandchildren: Bryan, Anthony Jamal, Alexander, Christopher, Amanda, Summer (Kevin), Taylor, and Breelyn; and one great-great-grandson Ethan. She also leaves to mourn her death two nieces: Sandra (Paul) Hill of Tuskegee, Alabama, and Jeanette (Alton) Tucker of Manassas, Virginia; five brothers-in-law; and seven sisters-in-law.
