Nathaniel Coker

August 9, 1934 - October 1, 2015

Nathaniel Coker, 81, departed this earthly life and entered into eternal rest on Thursday, October 1, 2015 at his residence in Lynchburg, South Carolina. Born on August 9, 1934 in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Arnette and Hazel Cousar Coker. Nathaniel attended the public schools of Sumter County. As a result of his quest for better employment, other than “plowing the mule”, he moved to Baltimore, Maryland. While residing in Baltimore, he was employed with the Baltimore City Department of Transportation for more than 35 years. In 2006, Mr. Coker returned to Lynchburg, South Carolina where he resumed his childhood passion of hunting. Nathaniel became a devoted member of Mt. Sinai A.M. E. Church. He took on the responsibility of cleaning the church and giving other gifts to support the church in any way that he could. His last and final day cleaning the church was Tuesday, September 29, 2015. “Sonny” was a passionate sports fan of the Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankees. His favorite sports personality was LeBron James, whom he always followed closely. In addition to his parents, Mr. Coker was preceded in death by four brothers: Arnette, Jr., Philemon, Randolph, Theodore James Coker; one son, Bennie Gamble; two nephews, Edward Lindsey and Tresvon Atriel Coker. Nathaniel Coker’s beautiful memories will be cherished by: a son, Bernie Gamble, Lynchburg, South Carolina; a daughter, Dorothy Nell (Nigel E.) Flynn, Columbia, South Carolina; two sisters, Coker Campbell and Clareatha Abrams of Lynchburg ; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
