August 23, 1966 - November 29, 2017
Samuel Hartwell, II, a child of God who loved his family and church, entered into eternal life on November 29, 2017. The beloved son of the late Samuel and Lucille Daniels Hartwell, he was joined in matrimony to the love of his life, Mrs. Mamie Hayes Hartwell, his devoted wife of eight years. He accepted Christ in his youth and was a member of Bishops' Memorial AME Church before joining First Nazareth Baptist Church in Columbia, SC. Samuel graduated from Eau Claire High School in the Class of 1984 and attended Benedict College for three years majoring in Environmental Engineering. He also completed additional studies at Denmark Technical College, attaining his certification in Auto-Body Technology. He was a proud member of the Prince Hall Family, belonging to the College Lodge #378 and the Holy Royal Arch Masons, Ethiopian Chapter #60. Samuel, affectionately called "Brother" by family and friends, had a quiet demeanor and was always willing to help anyone. If you were in need, he would be there. He had a charitable, selfless spirit, and you could always count on him for whatever was needed. Brother loved to grill-out, enjoyed landscaping, had a passion for cars and motorcycles, loved being with his family, and he loved to take his boat out and go fishing. He owned his own towing company, J & S Towing, and would assist anyone in need. Samuel studied the cello at the University of South Carolina, played cello in the Columbia Youth Orchestra, and performed across the city with his family quartet, the Daniels-Hartwell String Quartet. When he met Mamie, he met the love of his life; together, they built a life rooted in God and preserved by a great love that inspired each other and those around them. Samuel was actively in his church, First Nazareth Baptist, where he served on the Disaster Emergency Relief Ministry, the Media and Sound Ministry, and the Church Security Ministry. He also regularly supported his father's home church, Hickory Hill Baptist Church in Neeses, SC, where he could always be found during Big Meeting and Friends and Family Day. He leaves to cherish precious memories his devoted and loving wife, Dr. Mamie Hayes Hartwell; a dearly cherished son, Donald Jari McDaniels; three loving sisters: Tiffany (Anthony) Conelly, Dr. Marquita Daniels, and Dr. Julie Anna Hartwell; one brother, Minister David Hartwell; adoring aunts and uncles: Agnes Daniels, Burnell Daniels, Ruth Daniels, Wade (Mary) Daniels, Lee Vince Steadman, Sr., Jake N. Bookard, Sr., and Matthew (Janet) Hartwell; a host of loving in-laws who absolutely adored him; and a host of other relatives, colleagues, church members, and friends who will miss his daily presence in their lives.
