Msgt (Ret) Shelton Brown

Retired Master Sergeant, Shelton Brown departed this earthly life on Monday June 16, 2014, at his residence in Dalzell, SC. Born on November 9, 1938 and raised in Winston Salem, North Carolina, he was the first of eight children born to the late Chambers and Lullie Beatty Brown. He attended Atkins High School, until deciding to join the United States Air Force in January of 1961. While serving, his tours of military duties included many visits overseas and statewide. He visited many foreign countries such as: Tripoli, Libya; Bangkok, Thailand; Nationalist China, Bermuda, Panama, and returned stateside to be stationed at McGuire AFB, New Jersey to finally retiring at the Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, South Carolina. Master Sergeant Brown worked primarily in logistics and earned numerous military medals to include: The Air Force Commendation Medal with 3DEV, Vietnam Service Medal with 3DEV, Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Device and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. While stationed in New Jersey, he met the love of his life, Carolyn Williams. They were married in holy matrimony and to this beloved union, two children were born; a daughter, Joanne and a son, Shelton, Jr. In his early childhood, his spiritual maturation was shaped through the New Zion Baptist Church in Winston Salem, NC. His faith continued throughout his military career. After retirement, he and his family made their home in the Dalzell community. He then joined Mount Zion United Methodist Church in Sumter, SC and served faithfully on the church choir, Methodist Men and he relished his duty as the church photographer. Shelton loved his church family members and was always eager to serve in any capacity requested of him. To cherish precious memories, he leaves his loving wife of the home Carolyn; son, Shelton Jr. and daughter, Joanne and her husband Robert Burns; a grandson, Robert Jr.; surviving siblings are: Benjamin Brown of Clinton, MD, Harnetha Brown Parks of Greensboro, NC, Johnnie Mae Bailey of San Pablo, CA and Gordon Brown of Winston-Salem, NC; in-laws, Charles (Cynthia Davis) Williams; Celestine (William) Maddox, Sr. ,Albert (Jackie) Corley, Sandy Williams; five favorite nieces: Latonya, Ashley, Renee, Nikki and Arlene; nephews: Eugene, Christopher, Collin Lavan, John, Jr., Ronald and a special nephew, Antwan Williams; a host of cousins and many dedicated friends.
