SHIRLEY DELORIS MITCHELL

November 23, 1957 - February 27, 2021

Shirley Deloris Williams Mitchell departed this earthly life on Saturday, February 27, 2021 at MUSC Rutledge Tower in Charleston, South Carolina. Born on November 23, 1957 in Sumter County, she was a 1975 graduate of Hillcrest High School. Shirley was an active member of Willow Grove African Methodist Episcopal Church, where she served faithfully as a member of the Stewardess Board, Pastor’s Aide, and Church School Teacher for the junior class. Shirley was quiet; yet her quietness spoke volume about how she led her Christian life. Shirley was a protector and a friend. She was a dedicated “banker” for several family members. Her thoughtfulness was immeasurable, kind and always the peacekeeper, faithful and true. If you needed someone to listen, Shirley was always available, for she was a confidant to many. She was a nurturer to countless number of children who came through her door. She treated them as if they were her own. She will truly be missed, and her laughter will always be remembered. Trey (Tallis IV) named Shirley’s home the “Happy Land.” Shirley has finished the race here on earth, she supported and loved her family, and she fought a good battle. Now, she has gone home to rest in God’s “Happy Land.” The family thank you, Shirley, for all that you have done, you were there for every family member, and your love is everlasting. God’s peace to our big sister, we love you yesterday, today and everlasting. In addition to her father, the late Jessie Williams, she was preceded in death by a brother, Tyrone Williams. Shirley leaves several family members to cherish her precious memories: her steadfast and devoted husband of 43 years, Robert Mitchell; two sons, Doniza Williams of Rembert, SC, and Robert A. (Ashley) Mitchell of Atlanta, Ga; a daughter, Shana Mitchell of the home; one granddaughter, Chelsea Mitchell of Atlanta, GA; mother, Mary Alice Williams of Rembert, SC; four siblings, Richard Weathers of Rembert, SC; Jessie, Jr. (Josephine) of Atlanta, GA; Carolyn Sanders of Rembert, SC; and Terry Yates of Rembert, SC. She has six aunts, Francis Wade, Lucille Wade, Johnnie Mae Weathers, Rosemary Weathers, all of Washington, DC; Margaret Wright of Rembert, SC; and Rebecca Williams of Asbury Park, NJ; one uncle, Joseph Williams of Asbury Park, NJ; mother-in-law, Julia Chambers Mitchell; two-brothers-in-law, Johnny (Teresa) Mitchell and Frederick Mitchell of Rembert, SC; one sister-in-law, Mary Elizabeth Mitchell Osborne of Charlotte, NC; three godchildren, Taylor Miller, Michaela Yates, and Timothy Miller; a special cousin, Tiffany Jacobs; a host of nieces, nephews, and many other loving relatives and caring friends.
