Mrs. Arlene Manning Carmichael Joyner

Arlene Manning Carmichael Joyner, affectionately known as Dean by her Relatives, was born April 20, 1933, in Dillon, South Carolina. She was one of ten children born to the late Ed Manning and Lou Pearl McNeil Manning. Mrs. Joyner departed this life on Saturday, August 5, 2023 at her residence in Columbia, South Carolina. After attending Dillon Public Schools, Mrs. Joyner completed her undergraduate studies at Benedict College, receiving her BA in 1968, and later graduate studies at the University of South Carolina, earning her MA in 1975 Mrs. Joyner was employed as a language arts instructor by Richland School District 1 for twenty-five years, retiring in 1993. During her tenure as an instructor, she was passionate about the academic as well as social development of her students. In recognition of her hard work and dedication, Mrs. Joyner was named “Teacher of the Year” by her peers in 1974. In addition to her teaching, Mrs. Joyner was an avid gardener and a collector of Black memorabilia and books by and about Black people. She also engaged in ancestral research, writing, and publishing two volumes of family history in 2003 and 2013 respectively. In addition to these activities, Mrs. Joyner was a tireless community leader, serving as president of the North 21 Terrace Neighborhood Association for more than 20 years. Mrs. Joyner was also active in her church, Francis Burns United Methodist Church, which she joined in 1976 under Reverend Robinson. There she worked to establish the church library in the 1990’s, read to FBUM Church daycare students from 1993-1998 and served as a Lay Visitation Member until 2010. Arlene attended FBUMC faithfully until her health started to decline in 2018. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Joyner was preceded in death by her first husband Dr. Robert DuBose Carmichael, her high school sweetheart and father of her daughter, Rosalind and her second husband, Major Ernest H. Joyner III with whom she spent 20 blissful years. Also, preceding Mrs. Joyner in death were six sisters, Marie Manning, Roxie Bethea, Arneatha Watson, Ida Crawford, Cora Bethea and Pearl Manning; three brothers, Evangelist Levi Manning, Deacon Cadrict Manning, and Deacon Joe Louis Manning; dear friends who were like family; Josephine Williams, Geneva Clark, Wilma Hunter, Bessie Thomas, and Hermetta Kennedy. She leaves to cherish precious memories her daughter, Dr. Rosalind Carmichael of Elizabeth, New Jersey and a host of nieces, nephews and other loving family members, friends and neighbors,
