Mrs. Jessie Venetia Goodwin Hammonds

Jessie Venetia Goodwin Hammonds, native of Columbia SC, was the daughter of the late Elijah Love and Margaret Smith Goodwin was called to her eternal resting place on Tuesday, November 19, 2013 at the In-Patient Providence Hospice Hospital Unit, through Sisters of Charity Columbia SC. Affectionately known as Venetia, she was educated in the public schools of Richland County, graduating from CA Johnson High School in 1957, and attended Benedict College as a Nursing major. Mrs. Hammonds was employed as a Certified Nursing Assistant at the SC Department of Mental Health, at CM Tucker Nursing Care Center and Brian Psychiatric Hospital, where she retired in 2001. A diligent servant of the Lord, Mrs. Hammonds was a devout member of the St. Luke Episcopal Church of Columbia, SC, where she served in numerous capacities, to include being Chaplin of the Episcopal Church Women, member of the Chancel Choir, Sunday School, Chairperson of the Annual Tea and Hat Show, Adult Bible Study Formation, and the United Thank Offering Committee Breakfast Club. Through hymn and song, Mrs. Hammonds was a proud member of the Gospel Music Workshop of America- Columbia Chapter, the Thurston Fraizer Chorale under the leadership of the late Rev. James Cleveland, and the John Works Alumni Choir of Booker T. Washington High School. Community affiliations too numerous to name include the Columbia Urban League (I Am Woman Symposium), Greenview Park Senior Club, Fitness Club and Line Dancers. She also proudly represented the Philo Affiliates, friends of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. United in marriage marriage for 53 years, she leaves behind her loving husband, Mr. Albert C. Hammonds and daughter, Stephanie L. Hammonds of the home; three sons, Albert Q. (Annita) Hammonds, Sr. of Rowe, Georgia, Daryl L. (Valencia) Hammonds, Sr. of Blythewood, SC, and Darnell L. (Tamara) Hammonds of Columbia, SC; eight adored grandchildren, Albert Q. Hammonds, Jr. of California, Shawntel Hammonds of Georgia, Daryl Jr. and Desmond Hammonds of Blythewood, Xavier and Cameron Hammonds of Georgia, and Lauren and Jessica Hammonds of Columbia; brothers, Francis (Mary) Goodwin and Eddie Goodwin, Jr., brother-in-law, Alvin (Marie) Hammonds, and sister-in-law, Evangelist Estelle H. Smith, a special daughter Shelia Obleton Mims of Georgia, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Services for Mrs. Jessie Venetia Goodwin Hammonds will be held 10:00 am Tuesday, November 26, 2013 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, with interment to follow in Sweetenburg Gunter Cemetery in Wagner, SC. The family will receive friends 6-8 pm on Monday, November 25, 2013 at Palmer Memorial Chapel.
