Kam Dexter Coleman

Kam Dexter Coleman, loving father, brother, and son departed this life on October 4, 2016 at his residence in Atlanta, Georgia. Born in Sumter County on February 12, 1968, he was the son of Claude Coleman, Jr. and the late Mrs. Jessie Mae Curtis Coleman. Kam received his early education in the Sumter County Public Schools (Willow Drive Elementary School, Crosswell Drive Elementary School, and Bates Middle School). A 1986 graduate of Sumter High School, Kam was active in numerous clubs and organizations including Student Government. His great honor was serving the Class of 1986 as its Senior Class President. In 1990, Kam earned is Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science & International Affairs from the University of South Carolina. As a second year student, he was nominated for the 1988 Harry S. Truman Scholarship in recognition of academic performance and commitment to government service. Kam was also a devoted member of Alpha Phi Omega, a national service fraternity. After college, Kam moved to New York City to work in the financial services industry. Upon returning to the southeast, he participated in various civic activities. He found immense pleasure in coaching Little League Soccer and in volunteering with political campaigns. He enjoyed reading, art-gallery showings, and watching his South Carolina Gamecocks (win or lose). Kam loved his family and friends. Grant and Cameron were his proudest accomplishments and his lasting legacy. Those who knew Kam best will recall his easy smile, intellectual curiosity, and gentle manner. Those were his signature qualities. Kam was preceded in death by an adoring mother, Mrs. Jessie Mae Coleman, who stressed love, education and respect. He is survived by: his father, Mr.Claude Coleman, Jr. of Paterson, NJ, his sister Kamela Denise Coleman of Atlanta, Georgia, his sons Grant Maxwell Coleman of Charlotte, North Carolina and Cameron David Coleman of Cincinnati, Ohio, an uncle Richard Curtis of Asheville, North Carolina, a cousin Andre Curtis of Baltimore, Maryland, a cousin Nicole Curtis of Baltimore, Maryland and numerous friends, classmates, and professional colleagues.
