Lizzie Gayle

Lizzie Gayle the fourth youngest of four children born to the late Edward (Brooks) and Plum Jackson Gayle on May 5, 1927 in Sumter County. Lizzie was a lifelong member of St. Luke A.M.E. Church, where she served faithfully in many capacities including: secretary of Sunday school, President of Missionary, Shawfield Zone, Usher Board, secretary of the Pastor’s Aide, The Trustee Board, Senior Choir and Missionary Society. She was educated in the public schools of Sumter County and was a graduate of Lincoln High School, Class of 1949. Lizzie attended Morris College and graduated in 1953 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education. She did further studies at University of South Carolina, Sumter and Columbia campuses, South Carolina State College, Orangeburg, SC, and she just two hours short of her Master’s Degree. She worked as an Educator for (30) thirty years in Williamsburg, Sumter, Dillon, Darlington Counties and in Wilkes Georgia. She touched the hearts and minds of many professionally. Lizzie’s affiliations included: International Reading, South Carolina Educational, and Morris College Alumni Associations. Also, she was a member of the Royal Degree and Elizabeth Tent No. 59, of Williamsburg County. Lizzie valued education as a means of self-improvement and growth. She instilled this principal and a love for life to others. She was an excellent cook and she enjoyed growing flowers and gardening. Her beautiful floral arrangements were exhibited at the Sumter County Fair, annually. She was very disciplined about exercising and encouraging other to protect their health. She was preceded in death by her parents, two infant brothers, and her beloved sister and closest friend Elouise Gayle. She leaves to cherish precious memories, two special cousins, Amelia Geddis-Porter of Columbia, SC and Marie Jackson Pinkney of Piscataway, New Jersey and a host of other relatives and friends.
