Mrs. Martha Dora McLeod Davis McBride

Martha Dora McLeod Davis McBride, affectionately known as “Honey,” departed her earthly life on Thursday May 8, 2025, at Riverside Nursing Facility in Covington, Georgia. Born in Oswego, SC (Sumter County) on July 17, 1938, she was the fourth child of the late Walter and Nora Lee Dubose McLeod, Jr. Martha was a member of Clark UMC (childhood) and Ebenezer AMEC (marriage). Upon moving to Atlanta, GA, she was affiliated with Dodd Sterling UMC and was a member of Atlanta Community Church. She received her early childhood education from Mayesville Institute in Mayesville, South Carolina. She completed her diploma while attending Mount Pleasant High School in Elliott, South Carolina. She was employed by Tuomey Hospital as a nursing assistant, providing love and care for invalid people, and later at Wateree Community Actions in Sumter, SC, where she developed programs to help adolescents and support early childhood development, as well as various community actions in Atlanta, GA. Mother also received her Evangelist certificate to counsel those in need of religious support. Our mother’s favorite hobbies included attending to her flowers and gardening, as well as preparing meals. She was also a Gospel music enthusiast and a fashionista who loved to travel. Mother was a member of the Eastern Star Organization of Atlanta until her health start failing. Her hands were rarely still. Whether she was tending to her flowers, preparing a delicious meal, or selecting the perfect outfit, Martha found joy in the details. She loved gospel music, and her sense of style was unmatched. Wherever she went, her spirit lit up the room. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by: Eugene Davis (first husband), Julius McBride (second husband), sons Grandele “Bo” McLeod and a foster son Jonathan Allen; two sisters Mabel M. Chestnut and Azalee Lee Robinson; and one brother Timothy McLeod. She leaves to cherish precious memories: Four daughters — Cynthia Davis Parker (Melvin) of Charlotte, NC; Doroctha D. Glover (Paris) of Conyers, GA; Wondra Davis-Farmer (Earnest) of College Park, GA; Montini D. Gates (Jackson) of Conyers, GA, Stepdaughter Roger Mae Wheeler of Mayesville, SC. Two sons — London Davis (NeKayah) of Indian Land, SC; and Renault Davis (Connie) of Sumter, SC; Brandon Hitchcock of Atlanta, GA; Eight bonus children (McBride’s) Julia Mae Gaye, Willie Mae Reid (James), Mary Alice Ellis, Carol Leslie (Lester), Lester McBride, Bernard McBride (Valerie), Willie McBride, Julius McBride Jr., and David McBride (deceased); Sixteen grandchildren — Celeste Robinson, Shon Buchanan, Rodney Davis, Sharis Nicholson, Viondi Davis, Akil Benjamin, Kelly Davis-Carter, Ashley Benjamin, Mario Davis, Jasmine Davis, Dennis Davis, Charity Gates, Kira Gates, Christian Farmer, Cionne Gates, and Kyle Gates. Seventeen great-grandchildren, Nine great-great-grandchildren; Five brothers — Harry McLeod of Sumter, SC, Leroy McLeod (Hattie) of Mayesville, SC, Jacob McLeod (Connie) of Mayesville, SC. Abraham McLeod of Sumter, SC and Sam White (Hazelree) of Sumter, SC. Three sisters — Dorothy M. Myers and Lillian Williams (Isaac) of Sumter, and Lillian White of Sumter, SC. A host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
