Ms. Mary Mageline Choice Baldwin

The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” Psalm 27:1 Mary Magdalene Choice Baldwin, the wife of the late Andrew Baldwin, Jr., was born on June 20, 1921, in Clarendon County to the late Moses Choice and Martha Alston Choice. She departed this earthly life and entered into eternal rest on December 2, 2022, at the Sumter East Rehabilitation Center. Mary was educated in the public schools of Sumter County. She received Christ as her personal Savior at an early age and was baptized at High Hills Missionary Baptist Church. Mary’s unshakable faith and love for God, church, and family survived many of life’s challenges. She was an active member and served faithfully in several capacities: she was the eldest member of her church and served as Deaconess for 57 years. Mary married Andrew Baldwin, Jr., at an early age. She lovingly took on the role of mother to Andrew’s seven children, who affectionately called her Ms. Mary. They were later blessed with three more children. Mary’s willingness to help others and her domestic skills afforded her the opportunity to be employed at Shaw Air Force Base Lodging/Guest Houses, where she shared many words of wisdom and laughter with the Airmen and their families for 20-plus years. Mary indulged in several hobbies in her leisure time, she was a Woman of Class with a tasteful style in dressing; she loved shopping, enjoyed visiting nursing homes, she was a world traveler in supporting her family on many occasions; she enjoyed attending Church Revivals, listening to Gospel Music, and she was known for her delicious Peach Cobbler and Sweet Potato pie. Mary was preceded in death by five children, Algie Baldwin, Rosa Lee Moore, Susan Glover, Elizabeth Williams, and Elouise Baldwin; three grandchildren; Rose Mary Blanding, Valeria Scott, and Elaine Williams; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lucille Wright and Millie English; three Brothers, Mike Choice, Moses Choice and Jacob Choice. Mary leaves to cherish her precious memories, four loving and devoted daughters, Martha B. Peterson and Dorothy B. Chatman; Sumter, South Carolina; Maggie Williams, Smyrna, Delaware; Carrie (Damon) Robinson, Chesapeake Bay, Virginia; one devoted son, Andrew (Annie Mae) Baldwin; eighteen grand-children, twenty-eight great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Minnie Long, Catherine (Lewis) Stephens, and Nell Baldwin; a devoted nephew, Elder J.W.
