Hundreds turn out for Columbia walk against domestic violence

Permeco Myers gazed at the hundreds of faces at Finlay Park on Saturday morning knowing that many staring back were walking the same dark road she once traveled.
For longer than anyone should, the state health department worker endured an abusive domestic relationship at the hands of someone who considered her “his property” and ultimately held her hostage for more than 20 hours while stabbing her repeatedly.

Impacting Domestic Violence through Policy and Legislation. Our panel will include: SC State Representative from House District 79, Mia McLeod Butler, Survivor Dr. Karen Johnson, Attorney James Shadd, III, Richland County Sheriff Lott's representative Nina Mauldin and Social Worker Marjorie Hammock will be the moderator. This event will take place Tuesday November 18, 2014 from 6-8pm. Refreshments will be provided by Exclusive Berries and Treats. As always, this event is free to the public.

Why Vote? Critical Issues for November-Preventing Future Ferguson's
You will be able to register to vote as well as gain a picture ID. Discussion will include: What offices will be on the ballot? What decisions are facing midterm elections? How can those who often do not show up to vote be convinced to participate this time? What is the likelihood of unseating incumbents?
This event is free to the public.
Our "Family Forum Live!" panel on the Affordable Care Act included Rozalyn Goodwin Fache from the S.C. Hospital Assoication, Anita Grimes from Consumers Choice Health Care Providers, and Dr. Stewart Hamilton of the Eau Claire Cooperative Health Center.

Our dynamic panel included the following: Kela Thomas from the SC Department of Corrections Pardon and Parole Board; Mel Wallace from the SC Small Business Development Center; and Greg Davis from the SC Department of Commerce. Charles Clyburn was the moderator.
February's "Family Forum Live!"
February's "Family Forum Live!" topic was: FROM RECONSTRUCTION TO VOTER SUPPRESSION AND THE CORRIDOR OF SHAME. Our moderator was the acclaimed attorney Jerry Leo Finney who has a passion for the topic. Sitting to the far right is noted historican Dr. Larry Watson who is an expert on the 12 years of Reconstruction. We had a lively discussion and a strong attendance. We were honored to be a sponsor of Columbia's radio station WFMV's Family Fest. The gospel music was wonderful and we met many kind people.
April's "Family Forum Live!"
April's "Family Forum Live!" topic was: MENTAL HEALTH-EVERY FAMILY'S CHALLENGE. Our awesome panel included: Camille Carpenter with 25 years experience as a mental health counselor; Cissy Weaver a survivor of mental illness and works with NAMI; Attorney James Shadd III; and radio personality PA Bennett who was the moderator. We were also honored to have Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott on the panel as well.
We proudly sponsor The Lazarus House's basketball team, The Sumter Crusaders. We enjoy attending their practice sessions as well as the games. The young men are from14-17 years old.
Central Carolina Community Foundation had an interesting discussion on the attitudes of giving back to the community and included the uniqueness of each generation.
